Fall leaf cleanup vs mulching leaves in place around Lexington

Mulching leaves into turf can work if you have the right mower and the leaves are dry. Thick maple mats on fescue usually need pickup. Here is how we decide on real jobs.

Fall leaf cleanup vs mulching leaves in place around Lexington

Lexington yards under big maples get buried fast. The question every October is whether to grind leaves into the lawn, bag them, or haul.

Mulching in place works when leaves are mostly dry, the grass is still growing enough to recover, and you make enough passes that pieces are dime-sized. One pass with a dull blade and six inches of wet oak leaves is how you get mold and bare patches.

When we bag or haul

Wet layers that matte on turf get removed. Same for leaves piled on bentgrass-sized patches of struggling lawn. If you already have thin shade turf, treat leaves like a smothering blanket, not free fertilizer.

Mower height and sharpness

Raise height for mulching passes. Sharpen or swap blades mid-season if you are doing your own lot. Commercial crews change plans when poplar leaves turn to paste.

Beds are not turf

Whole leaves belong out of hosta crowns. Shredded leaves can work as winter mulch in some beds if disease was not an issue that year. Apple scab on crabapple means those leaves should leave the property instead of becoming next year's inoculum.

Timing with city pickup

If your municipality runs vacuum weeks, align heavy drop to that window so bags do not sit wet for two weeks. Raccoons love bag corners.

What we sell as a service

Seasonal cleanup for us means blow, tarp, and haul, or mulch-mow where it fits. We do not promise mulch-mow on every lot because some should not get it.

If you want a one-time November visit in Lexington or Georgetown, mention tree types and approximate lawn square feet. We schedule routes by neighborhood to keep pricing sane.

If you are comparing spring versus fall work too, the spring checklist article pairs with this one without repeating the whole calendar.
