What a paver patio costs in Central Kentucky (and what moves the number)

Nobody likes a quote that says "call for pricing" and then doubles after the first shovel goes in. We try to front-load the boring parts: access for a mini skid, how much old concrete has to come out, and where water will go after we change the grade.

Most residential paver patios we build in Lexington and Nicholasville land in a range that depends on those factors more than on the brand of stone. Fancy pavers cost more per square foot, but a bad base costs more over five years than upgrading the color.

Base prep is the line item that matters

Kentucky freezes thaw cycles push on edges. If we skimp on compacted aggregate depth, you get heave and wobble. We dig to spec for the soil we find, not for what the catalog assumes.

Clay holds water against the bottom of the base. Sometimes we add drainage along the house side before we lay bedding sand. Skipping that step saves a few hundred dollars until the first winter you notice a damp wall.

Access and tear-out

Backyards with a six-foot gate mean more hand work or a smaller machine. That is slower. Front walks we can reach with a truck are faster. Removing an old broom-finished slab adds dump fees and labor, but it can still beat building a floating patio on top of cracked concrete that keeps moving.

Pattern and border math

Simple running bond installs faster than tight herringbone with a soldier course on three sides. Borders use more cuts. We show photos of past jobs so you can see what each pattern does to labor before you pick one from Pinterest.

Permits and utilities

Some towns want a permit for retaining walls over thirty inches. Gas and electric locates are non-negotiable. We bake that time into the schedule instead of surprising you the week of start.

How to compare two bids

Ask both contractors for base depth, compaction method, and edge restraint. If one quote is half the other, someone left something out or plans to change-order you later.
